~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sam knew right from the gate that this race was not going to go as they had hoped.
Dhesi broke late, and his stride seemed choppy, his breathing too shallow. He seemed to lack his normal drive, the surging will to run and win that spurred him faster than any jockey could.
She kept him running short for the first half mile, trying to figure out what the issue was without compromising the race. Most worrying of all, she barely had to hold him in to stop him from chasing the front runners. Normally one of his weaknesses was fighting the bit and trying to catch the front horses, but not tonight.
Still, he didn't seem to be in pain or discomfort, he just didn't have his usual impulsion. The difference in feeling that Sam could sense was hardly tangible in his speed. The bad break had cost them any chance of an early lead, and they were trailing the pack, but since she had no idea what was wrong (or even if something really was wrong), she decided to push the pale stallion onwards and hope for the best.
Cold clumps of muddy track dirt flew through the air behind them as Sam squeezed Dhesi to a faster pace. He picked it up willingly, and slowly began to close in on the mass of horses in front of them even as the dark closed in ahead of them all.
Just when they reached the edge of the unlit section of the track, it began to snow. Sam barely noticed. She was too focused on the remaining expanse of the track ahead, trying to simultaneously calculate the the best path forward and urge Dhesi to open his stride to the max.
Could they make up for their bad start? Sam doubted it. But damned if they weren't going to try!
First, let me say I really love this, and I'm actually mad at you for not turning it in on time...
Gorgeous work with light, freaking A. Yami.
5 pts Story for being understandable, exciting, relevant, and creative. I really liked the ending, also even though you make me for being late and restricted now in scoring, it was kind of interesting that you included that aspect. If that makes sense.
No ghosts.
Oh believe me, I'm mad at me too. I was actuallyreally damn close to finishing it on time, too, but didn't get the tack/jockey done by the deadline because I was traveling back to the US that day. :beats self with stick:
Thank you! I was trying to get across the sense of trailing behind (which is why there's nobody behind him) yet closing the gap (which is why he's towards the front of the composition).
