the moments pass so swiftly by xKhamsinStables the moments pass so swiftly by xKhamsinStables
UPDATE: Final version. Probably. I kept the warm light on Khalim, but the rest cooler. It is winter, after all...

KhS El Khalim and Dante savour one of Khalim's rare serene and loving moments.

Dante is the only one Khalim trusts enough to let his guard down with. We don't know what his life was like before we bought him at auction as a 3 year old we don't know how much of his chronic bad behaviour and rage is genetic, and how much is his early upbringing. You can deeply damage a horse in 3 years, after all. In moments like this, though, Dante is content simply to share in the bond they have forged in the past twelve years, tenuous as it may be, and to feel the stallion's heat and strength calm against his hands.

I need help on two things here

First off, does anyone have any idea how I could find the ref I used? I have the file saved to my computer, but no names (nothing on the photographer, horse, rider, etc - the rider's a girl with blonde hair in the photo). I want to give the original credit, because this was very closely based on that photo. I'm pretty sure I found it on Tumblr.

Secondly, which version do you like better? The left or the right? Vote here: [link]
Earlier/different versions can be found here:

This picture is just wonderful. I love the shading and Khalim will (of course, look at him!) always be one of the horses I admire in harpg.

Such a touching painting. It's so soft and peaceful.
You managed that close up of Khalim's face very well, too. Dante also has some intense cheekbones, haha.

Thank you. I'm pretty pleased with it.

Dante does have noticeable cheekbones anyway, but he's also meant to be sort-of kissing Khalim, so I tried to make his cheeks a little more hollow to show that.

Oh, and to find the ref you might try using tineye.com. It's not perfect and doesn't always find the image, but it's worth a shot!

Thank you! Being in the desert, Khamsin's winters are usually quite cold, dry, and windy, with occasional icy rain. I picture this particular winter day as cool, clear, and still, with the smallest bit of warmth from the sun...

D'aww! Khalim looks so peaceful and at ease here. I love the detail of his fur, he looks so soft a huggable :meow: The story is so sweet.

I like the right side, since it's a warmer hue, and gives a sense of security and love.

Thank you, both for the compliment and the input. I went with a mixture of the two — warm colours for Khalim, cooler colours for the rest. Feels more wintery to me.

Aw, that makes me want to go snuggle a horse, even if it would break my face for hugging it's head :).

I sort of want to see Dante's face from the left side on the right side image. I like the deeper color of the shadows on his skin on the left, but the right image has the overall warmth and closeness of their relationship. If I had to pick one straight out I'd go with the right one.

Thank you for the comment and input. I ended up going with a mixture of the two versions that's actually not far from what you suggested.

I've known some horses who were quite content to let you hold the heads, especially if you scratch their itchy spots for them. :3

Very nice. ^^ I like the black on Khalim better on the left but the color of Dante's skin on the right. His skin tone looks richer and a bit more vibrant on that one, but it also looks too bright between his cheek bone and brow line. Overall, I'd say the left.

As for finding the original image, try a google search. Try using different key words that you think should be about right or along those lines. Then if you know the original size of the image (just check the size in pixels in PS or something), you can do a search for the exact size on a google image search. On the image search once you're viewing the search results, click on "Search Tools," then "Any size," then "Exactly," and type in the exact size of the image. Sometimes that helps. ^^

Thanks. I ended up mixing the two versions, and went with the warmer tones for Khalim, since it made the picture warmer and black horse's winter coats are often brownish anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion on looking for the ref. I've still had no luck finding it, unfortunately. It's sad because it's a lovely photo and really deserves the credit. :/
